HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Lots of Black-headed grosbeak song (nearly all heard but not seen),
  • the Black-headed grosbeak nest (very small 5-inch diam. nest 7 feet up in a tiny tree near the path
  • Lots of Violet-green swallows, flying fairly low, at the Arboretum and along the flats.
  • Spotted towhee, singing, a little way up the path to the saddle. It sang about 9 feet up, on a branch out in full view, for 3 or 4 minutes.
  • House wren, about 5 feet up on a branch, partway up the path to the saddle, singing the same song over and over: a few notes then a buzz. Part of the group got to see it for 2 or 3 minutes.
  • Seeing 1 male Western tanager, and 1 female Lazuli bunting.
  • Plus having a great view of some Cedar waxwings.

Not birds:

  • 3 deer on the flat, plus 6 more partway up the hill.
