Two Videos by Nancy Clogston

Priscilla wrote:
Nancy Clogston took two wonderful videos recently. This first one shows two Cedar Waxwings engaged in a courtship ritual in which they pass a food item back and forth to one another. It involves each taking a step away and then back to the other bird before returning the food item to the other bird. Some of you may have seen this on a BOGS walk led by Donna Albino to Chuck Kesey's property near Fern Ridge Reservoir several years ago, though not everyone in the group saw this. (I was with a small group who did not see it).

  • Linda Oppenheimer Beautiful. nice catch!
  • Priscilla Sokolowski Fantastic!
It's pretty rare to catch a yellow-breasted chat out in the open. They sing a lot in the mornings before 9 this time of year but you hardly see them. And I'm surprised that you found one at Stewart Pond I don't know that there's been a record of them being there before. In the 80s I only knew three places to find them one was that Finley. One was at malheur Page Springs and another one was at Elijah Bristow Park on Highway 58. Now we have them at Fern Ridge Royal; we have them at coyote South unit on Nelson Road near the pond at the corner; now also apparently Stewart pond; also EWEB Wetlands. There are I'm sure a few other places in the Eugene area itself - oh yeah - Clearwater Landing too.

VIDEO OF CEDAR WAXWING BONDING RITUAL
Taken by Nancy Clogston, May 17, 2020

After the rest of the flock flew off these two Cedar Waxwings stayed behind and carried out this bonding behavior. This morning (May 17), on Christensen Rd near the Raptor Center. I saw Cedar Waxwings doing this same sort of exchange dance at Stewart Pond 2 years ago. So fun!

  • Priscilla Sokolowski Wow! Never seen that! Such a cute ritual
  • Betsy Huffsmith I saw it once on Chuck Kesey’s land with BOGS.
  • Priscilla Sokolowski Betsy Huffsmith I'm glad you mentioned that Betsy I was on that trip but didn't see it. The group was spread out in different areas that day and I'd forgotten about that. I find it especially easy to forget things I never saw haha.
