Ankeny and Baskett Slough Wildlife Refuge Birding
with Floyd Weitzel/Willamalane
We don't often begin an outing with a Peregrin Falcon in plain view! This one stayed around for a while too.
A couple Ruddy Ducks were swimming and diving a lot pretty close to us.
I think it might have been Jennifer Haynes that pointed out the very small goose among the larger ones. I went to Floyd and said "One of these Geese is not like the others." He explained that it was a Cackler and that there are several races of Cacklers of various sizes. He thought this must be about the smallest of all those.
Seems like back in the 70s I used to see a lot more male Northern Harriers. These days they are almost a rare treat; so gray and white compared to the much darker brown females and juveniles.
The next several items are links to slow-motion videos. Some will take longer than others to begin playing. Click on the link. On my computer even if I select "open" the video still downloads to my computer before it begins to play. This can take a minute or so.
