LOCATION: Island Park Birding Loopk
Island Park's birding loop. CAUTION for people with mobility impairment: Part of the loop trail is unimproved dirt with a couple of rough portions. Directions: From Willamalane Adult Activities Center, walk W from the NW corner of their main parking lot just N of the building. Go approx. 1/2 block on grass, cross a bridge over a creek, go 20 or 30 feet, and turn R at the little birding trail/loop sign. It is a short loop with a creek on its N side and the river on its S side.

TRIP ATTENDEES: 18 of us walked the loop trail.

OF INTEREST:

  • On way to the talk before the walk: Ospreys: 2 on the Washington-Jefferson/Delta Hwy. exit osprey pole. Seen by Janet.
  • On the walk: A female mallard very close to us in the little creek by the bridge, doing the dabbling action over and over.
  • At the river: Seeing 3 Spotted sandpipers: 2 flying, plus 1 on far bank of river, VERY camouflaged in the stones there.
  • Canada goose on a distant river bank, masquerading as a wood duck: It had its rear to us, with black and white feathers looking at a distance like a wood duck.
  • 2 Northern flickers interacting on the same branch, with a second pair 2 trees away.
  • We saw no raptors at all today.
